From Jean Paul Gaultier’s landmark Spring/Summer 1994 “Les Tatouages” collection, this matching mesh set belongs to one of the designer’s most influential explorations of body art, cultural imagery and second-skin construction.
The engineered print combines geometric block motifs, faux-woven textures and crimson-to-ivory bands across semi-sheer micro-mesh. Its layered composition evokes Oceanic textile traditions, particularly the repeated structures and natural tonal contrasts of tapa cloth. The prominent Tahitian phrase “NAVE NAVE MOE” carries associations of pleasure, delight and dreaming, while potentially also referencing French Post-Impressionist Paul Gauguin’s 1894 painting of the same name.
The fitted long-sleeved top creates a continuous second-skin silhouette, complemented by a multi-panel maxi skirt with controlled front splits. Exceptionally rare as a complete matching set, this is a significant surviving example of the printed mesh that defined “Les Tatouages” and became central to Gaultier’s enduring archive.
